In the very midst of a national crisis, in which a leading part in the defence of national interests has been shaped by the Rev. Dr. O'Hickey, he has been called upon by the Trustees of Maynooth College to resign the Professorship of Irish. Lest it should thus be permitted to appear that Dr. O'Hickey has forfeited his high claims to the gratitude and affection of his fellow-countrymen, it has been thought proper to institute a Testimonial and Subscription, which will afford to all who so desire an opportunity to express their sense of his great national services.
Dr. O'Hickey has for many years taken a leading part in the promotion of the national Language Movement, which, in the belief of men of all parties, has inspired Ireland with a new life and a new power. It is now some years since the plain-spoken and telling words of his published addresses on Irish Education laid the foundation of a great reform in the then almost hopelessly Anglicised school systems of Ireland. As Vice-President of the Gaelic League, in succession to Father O'Growney, Dr. O'Hickey shared no labour in studying the details and conditions of Irish Education, in so far as they concerned the actual and possible advancement of Nationality through the medium of the schools, is due in shaping a clear and definite Educational policy for the Gaelic League. To him, more than to any other, is the position which the National Language has attained and the prospect of its attaining a still stronger and sounder position in Irish Education. To him cliefy it is due that the Irish nation can now confidently and resolutely demand that a University offered for its acceptance must conform to the National Ideal, and must take the leading part in the rebuilding of an Irish Nation.
When the controversy about the National character of the University arose, it was Dr. O'Hickey who most clearly defined the nature of the crisis. It was his plain and forcible statements that led the Irish public to understand the choice between a University which would be National and Irish and a University which would be Provincial and West British, and to understand that they had now the power to build up a National stronghold in the University or to reject the University if it should fail to show itself throughly and genuinely National. Dr. O'Hickey's statements on this great question have rendered a memorable and historic service to his activity. But those very statements, and they alone, have been the occasion of a crisis in the work of his life. His acts and words are now before the tribunal of the Irish Nation. The subscribers and signatories to this Testimonial come forward to the witness in his behalf. They are confident that whatever may be his lot, Ireland at all events will not adjudge him to be an evil-doer and an outcast.
