running as there was trouble in the city. I, at
the age of eight, with my seven-year-old brother

Removal of Tone
Memorial Base
A U.S.A. ten-cent coin of 1820, bearing the scratched initials, "J. R.," and a newspaper sodden with water and almost unreadable—these were the articles found beneath the foundation-stone of the Wolfe Tone and United Irishmen memorial in St. Stephen's Green, Dublin, when it was removed from its site in November, 1925, by order of the Commissioners of the County Borough of Dublin.
Coin, newspaper, and foundation-stone have since reposed in the muniment room of City Hall. The stir created by the Wolfe Tone and United Irishmen Memorial Committee, which was revived sporadically during the ensuing eighteen years, cropped up again on February 1st of this year, when the City Council adopted a resolution "on behalf of the citizens, and in common with Nationalist and Gaelic Ireland," protesting against the removal of the stone, and asking the City Manager for a report on the circumstances surrounding the removal.
The report now states that in August, 1925, the Garda authorities requested the removal of the stone on account of traffic obstructions caused by the lamps and standards surrounding the site of the proposed
memorial. Offer of an alternative site was provisionally accepted by Mr. J. R. Reynolds, on behalf of the Memorial Committee, but before the conditions were discussed the Commissioners ordered the removal of the stone.
A report from the City Architect in December, 1925, stated that the statue might take the forms of either a "statue on a pedestal, an obelisk, or a monumental arch . . . costing, respectively, £2,000, £5,000 and £10,000." He also mentioned that the adoption of a new town plan for the city would afford a selection of new sites.
Mr. P. J. Hernon, City Manager, now states in his report that the matter did not appear to have been pursued further either by the Commissioners or the Memorial Committee. Last year the selection of a site was revived by the late Mr. J. W. O'Beirne, and the views of the promoters were invited by the Corporation, but no reply has since been received. Answering a further question contained in the February 1943 resolution, for information as to whether the Commissioners' action had the sanction of the then Minister for Local Government, Mr. Hernon states that the matter was not submitted in 1925 to the Minister.

CHILDERS' HUSBAND WAS A FAMOUS AUTHOR ("RIDDLE OF THE SANDS"). HE FOUGHT WITH THE IRISH REPUBLICAN ARMY AGAINST THE BRITISH DURING THE ERA OF "THE TROUBLE". IRONICALLY, HE WAS EXECUTED BY THE FREE STATE REGIME AFTER THE BRITISH HAD LEFT
