and God bless your work. May He strengthen you every day in the resolution you have taken that you will drive out of your hearts the desire for strong drink that was the disgrace of your fathers and the ruin of your country." (Applause.)
DISTINGUISHED FRANCISCAN'S TRIBUTE TO BISHOP.
Very Rev. Father Aloysius, O.S.F.C., offered heartfelt congratulations to the organisers of the glorious demonstration they had witnessed in Dublin that day. Father Flinn might be proud of his Pioneers. If Father
Cullen were alive his heart would beat with joy on seeing such a huge demonstration.
He also wished to say how proud and grateful all of them were to have Most Rev. Dr. Gaughran amongst them. Those of them who knew what he had done, and was doing for temperance in his diocese were deeply grateful, and prayed that God would bless him and prolong his years. The great means those fighting for the cause of temperance relied on was personal sacrifice and the treasury from which they drew the greatest inspiration, strength and success—the Sacred Heart of Jesus. (Applause.)
CALL TO THE GOVERNMENT.
Rev. Dr. Coffey, Maynooth College, proposed the following resolution:—"That this meeting of Pioneers, gathered from every county of Ireland, and representing a quarter of a million of pledged Total Abstainers, emphatically demand that the moderate measure of temperance reform recently introduced in the Dail should be passed in its entirety, and improved. We demand this in the interests of the country, and still more in the interest of the souls redeemed by Jesus Christ."
Though he was proposing the resolution, Dr. Coffey said he was not very enthusiastic about it, as it did not go far enough. It suffered from many grave defects, but as there were a few good points in it, he was prepared to propose the resolution. Unless the Bill before the Dail was improved to embody their demands it would not satisfy him for one. If the elected Government did not give such laws as they desired, under the Constitution they had the right to initiate legislation themselves.
DUTY OF THE PEOPLE.
In this matter of liquor legislation, if their Government did not give what the sound public opinion of the country demanded, it was up to the people to proclaim by initiative and referendum what they did demand in reference to temperance legislation. (Applause.)
Rev. T. Murphy, S.J., seconded the resolution, which was passed with acclamation.
The Rev. Chairman imparted the Papal Blessing to the assembled thousands at the close of the proceedings, after which the immense gathering sang together, "To Jesus Heart All Burning." The singing of this hymn, and earlier in the proceedings of "Hail Queen of Heaven," by an audience of 10,000 will be long remembered by those present.
