In Munster, the province of agriculture, we have the great anomaly of a University without a Chair of Agriculture! Another proof of the wisdom of English rule in Ireland! "Cater for the greatest good of the greatest number," says the first principle of good government. In Munster the greatest number devote their lives to agriculture, and yet the centre of science in the province is no centre of scientific agriculture. In the famine days England's political economists employed our starving men to dig pits and fill them up again; to build roads which led to nowhere, and houses which were never intended to support a roof. Up in County Kildare there stands a monument of those days and those methods. On the railings around it there is a notice which warns the public that the building is dangerous. It is known as "The Folly." In the 20th Century we have grown no wiser in appreciation of CONTENTS:— PAGE General Notes ... 59 The Bishop of Cork on Sinn Fein 69 The Case for Dobbin's Strikers 71 Correspondence 72 Trust the Church 73 Luct an Fainne 75 Cruairo-ceirte ... 75 Sean-úirnaige 76 Etiquette for Students 77 A Warning or an Incentive ... 79 Poems : Rallying Song of the A.O.H. 70 Those Hypocrites of Germany 78 English economists then we were in the 19th. They built us then impassable roads and uninhabitable houses; they build us now a University where an agricultural population can learn everything but agriculture! This is "The Folly" of Munster. When will our people open their eyes to see the spoiler's hand in every act of foreign government? They fling at us their castiron "crumbs of comfort," guaranteed made in England for England, guaranteed to fit as awkwardly here as a goat in the sanctuary. They call them by euphonious names, and we clap our hands and talk big non-sense, and fail to see the golden pieces we have given away—we children—for the glitter of a glass necklace. We get jobs to corrupt our public honour; tiny dockyards and tiny munition works to play with greatness; a primary and secondary educative system to teach us English history, English greatness and ourselves to be English too; a University to teach all our farmers to be doctors, with nobody to cure, and all our shopkeepers to be scientists, where nothing is done scientifically.
