The Dublin fac-simile, of which only 100 copies were printed. Of the original Mr. Charles Butler observes, "It is said in the title to be printed at Frankfort, superiorum permissu; but it was supposed to have been printed in Portugal; it was residing in Portugal. From the light thrown on the history of that period by the recent publication of contemporary letters, &c., there is much reason to think that it was conceded by the much reason to think and father Peter Walsh, for the purpose of waking up the alliance between the northern Irish, under Owen Roe O'Neill, and the Kilkenny confederates. To ching this book Rinuccini, Nunzio to the Irish Confederates, makes the following remarks in a letter addressed to the French Nunzio, and dated Galway 1st October, 1647:—"A book printed in Frankfort has been brought to this country, but written in Portugal &c., which we believe to be a feigned name—nom finto. The first copy came from France, and subsequently considerable numbers of copies came from Portugal. The drift of the Book is to prove that the king (Charles I.) and the English have lost all right to Ireland by non-observance of the conditions on which Hadrian IV it to them. I am told that the partizans of Lord Lord Ormond caused the book to be burned in Kilkenny; and here in Galway they are endeavouring to find out persons having copies of it. The Ormondists avail of it to deprecate the clergy and the Ulstermen, altogether they are the authors of it, and this with a view to make Owen Roe O'Neill king, he being of ancient lineage, etc. etc. But all this notwithstanding, I clearly perceive that the jurists and lawyers who repudiate the propositions, that a heretic king is illegitimate, are at the bottom of the whole affairs, etc., etc."—Nunziatura in Ireland, pp. 250-7.

Francof, 1645, and Dub. 1826 The Dublin fac-simile, of which only 100 copies were printed. The origin and authorship of this notorious work is involved in great doubt and obscurity. In Ware's Irish writers it is attributed to Con. or Constantine O'Mahony, S.J., a native of Munster who was residing in Portugal.
