My dear Fr. Pro.
I have just received your kind letter, forwarded to me from Watts. I am here with Gabriel giving a two weeks mission, and so far it is very well attended. Bishop Keane was enquiring for you, and hopes your American trip did you good. He leaves for Rome after Easter. Bishop Cantwell has gone already to the Holy Land, and Rome &, accompanied by Mon. McCarthy, Frank Conaty, and of course Nellie. You will see them in Ireland probably. Bishop McBinley also goes after Easter, and the Archbishop goes to Rome in the Fall I understand. I called to see him on my way here, but he was busy, and I had a word with Jim. Cantwell, telling him I hope he is not forgetting the House I said we rely on to have some definite news for me before I go home for the Chapter. He said he would do all he could. Bishop Keane was anxiously looking for a Priest to take Fr Guerin's place in Marysvill as he is accompanying the Bishop to Rome. I had no one to give him.
Leo has promised a man to the Pastor of St Teresa's in San Francisco and this cripples Raphael, who is now looking for one to replace him whilst he is home. So if I had the assurance of the two young Fathers coming out in July, I could arrange accordingly. I will set out on the Visitations after Easter Week, as we have a Carnaval in Watts that week to try to make money.
I thank you very sincerely for relieving us of so much of American Bill. I sent you another $100, hoping it will arrive. Regarding the appointment of the temporary Superior, I had Fr Casimer

in my mind. I think he is the best you could select. Regarding Watts I should wish you to make this temporary arrangement of Fr Finbarr to look after the House, and Fr Gabriel to take charge of the Church, and the things of the parish. Neither of them is to my mind a suitable man to be made pastor of the parish. Finbarr could not bear the strain, and Gabriel who is very obliging in every way, and liked pretty well, I fear he has not sufficient ballast for such a parish. But when each will know their duties there will be no squabling, as there does be in my absence I think the above arrangement would tide over difficulties temporally, and coming from you would exclude favouritism, as they would term it, on my part.
Willie O'Brien wrote me a beautiful letter in reply to my $1000, and gave my the offer of an Altar for one of Western Missions. I have not yet heard from Bernard as to how he is progressing with his teachers. I will find out when I go on Visitation there. I have 'nt hear from Luke either.
I sent you the latest as to Seraphim, and he says he is absolutely at the disposal of his superiors. Stephen and Reg. are doing well at Santa Ynez. They have got a Car. With best thanks for festal greetings, and wishing you and all the home fraternity all the Easter Joys.
