Six since escaped. On the 2nd July a small enemy post at Costello in the 4th Western Division was captured by us with 7 rifles. Arrangements had been made to attack Spiddal, the only other enemy post in the Western Division, on the same day, but owing to difficulties in transport in this mountainous district, this operation had to be suspended. North Mayo attacked a steamer conveying enemy troops from Killala to Emiscone. Whilst engaged in this operation they were attacked in the rear by a large body of enemy troops. During these attacks large quantities of ammunition were wasted by the enemy. Communication by the enemy with Newport could only be carried on by water. After all enemy posts had been captured, enemy reinforcements from Crossmolina made a systematic attack on our forces at the Worthcouse, but on the approach of our men, they beat a hasty retreat. The town was completely in our hands at 1 p.m. We took 137 prisoners, including officers, a number of rifles, machine gun and 10,000 rounds of ammunition, a number of revolvers, cars, petrol, food, stuffs etc., were also captured. All our troops except the guard on enemy prisoners were clear of the town at 6 p.m. The Brigadier, North Mayo, then sent 22 officers and men, and having liberated the prisoners we left at 11 p.m. by North Coast Road, the Brigadier having withdrawn his men to the Bonnicolon district. On this (Wodnesday) evening, there arrived about 500 enemy reinforcements, with the armoured car \"The Big Fellah\". Anticipating an attack on Brigade H.Q., outside Bonnicolon, ambush positions were taken up by our outpost on the Cap Road. On the Thursday morning before our men had an opportunity of completely laying a mine, and occupying their positions, the enemy consisting of 150 men, an armoured car and several lorries came on our men. The enemy sighting our preparations got up on our flank and utilised their machine guns in encircling our troops, preventing reinforcements coming up. This engagement lasted three hours during which Brigadier General Lalor and the driver of an enemy armoured car were killed and Comdy.Gen.Lalor twice wounded. Enemy also report 12 others of their troops wounded. The enemy captured 13 of our men. In this as in Ballina we had no casualties.
