Dr Henebry advocated that the children of Ireland ought to be instructed through the medium of the Irish language, as Irish is the National language of the people, and it is through its own language that the education of every nation is conducted. The nature of a people is according to the language to which they were instructed in their youth. There was created for us a different nature and a dulness of intellect from the time we yielded to English as the language of our Gaelic youth in place of their natural Gaelic. The Gaelic language was suitable for every necessity and lent itself to every requirement of modern development, and without that language we should never have true learning again.
