There is the more hurry because this music is intimately and essentially associated with the Irish spoken language, and Irish as a spoken language is in imminent danger of extinction. For the highest grade of Irish music, viz., the slow singing airs, with all their marvellous graces of tonality and phrase, have completely died out in the English portions of Ireland, whereas the hard timbre tunes or those with a strong beat accent and simple phrasing such as reels, doubles, jigs, etc., are preserved almost as well in English as in Irish Ireland. It is in order to preserve the former class, now infinitely precious and swiftly dying with their medium of existence, the Irish language, that there is need for haste. Indeed the same need affects the second class of music, for traditional instrumentalists are now rapidly dying out, and so are the women who had the habit of jigging dance music. And the base tradition emanating from towns will very swiftly overwhelm and submerge for ever the last remains of our music. Hence those persons who know the value of our music and the extremely short tenure of its existence are busy now making machine collections. Both the Universities of Berlin and Vienna have collections made in Ring, Dungarvan, Coolnasmeer, and Kilgobinet, and if people living at such a distance can afford time and money to make such collections is it not a shame for us, who live amongst this matter and trample it under our feet every day, that we do not make some effort to greasp some little samples and specimens from it is it passes? For besides the scientific interest which moves the University authorities in Berlin, Vienna and elsewhere we might be expected to have in addition a little patriotism pointing the same way. This was from a fiddler named Tom Higgins in St. Patrick's House, Hennessy's Road. He is a fiddler and a descendant of fiddlers and musicians. He represents then what may be called the last of Irish professionalism, in music. He is a native of Kilkenny and was taught when very young by his father. He was afterwards influenced by various players, both fiddlers and pipers. He played with young Cash, the Wicklow piper, on the road for several years. He says the best musician he ever heard was Spillane, the piper who lived and died some years ago in Cork. Tom is a reel player of the first order, having the old-time jot of the bow with the marvellous address of wrist and forearm of the real tradesman. I never saw anything at all to equal his pliancy of wrist and consequent bow command. The richness of his bow mixing in playing his reels is a revelation. From the materials I collected it would be possible to write a fairly full treatise on the bowing of the Irish reel. This is a matter that has never been examined, and I never saw a word on it with the exception of the few remarks on bowing Scotch dance tunes in a collection issued some years ago in Glasgow. I forget the name of the man who produced it. Now, here is one of the most wonderful arts in the world, the bowing of an Irish reel, and no reference to it has ever been made by a press that daily showers inanities on this land, and nobody raises a little finger to stop it on its quick flight to eternal silence. I think I referred to it, though, some time ago, but my remarks then rested on general impressions and not on a concrete examination of the material. I also desire to collect from the following musicians: Mr. Bergin, flute player, of Tullaroan; Pat Dunne of New Birmingham, Thurles, diddler; Jim Byrne, of Mooncoin, piper. Jim came from Trim, Co. Meath, and he remained in the Waterford district on my advice. He plays in Waterford on Saturdays. I heard Jim when in humour doing as good piping as ever I heard. I possess about eight records from Paddy Forsby, of Chicago the king of Irish pipers, but I eagerly desire more. Tom Quinn, blacksmith, Teoraneena, formerly of Kilrossenty. Tom, for accuracy of fingering and for wonderful tune, is not to be beat n. He also plays the flute. Tom Launders, Cahir. He is a fiddler, a native of Bansha, and spent over thirty years in Yonkers, New York, N.Y., He has the sweetest Irish finger I ever heard, and a collection of music that is unique. It is to be hoped he will give his valuable aid to the University in this business in company with the rest of the musicians. By means of the former old records bearing a tune already, or new ones that from any cause have turned out failures may be cleaned for taking a fresh record. By means of the copying machine an almost unlimited power of multiplication of original records is provided. For if an original were subjected to all the hacking of long playing for various purposes of examination and research it would very soon become useless. A tonometric examination alone, i.e., a recording of the number of vibrations per second made by each of its tones in order to determine its curve of pitch, would destroy any record. If times get good hereafter we hope to secure an Appun Tonmesser. This is an instrument blown by a bellows like a small organ and having a number of reeds only one vibration apart, or at most two. Its register is the compass of the singing voice. When examining a record the dividing screw of the phonograph is unshipped so that one can easily drop the recording point on the note under examination as often as needed. One then searches for the stop or reed on the Tonmesser that is dead in tune with it; and the number of vibrations made by that reed, a known quantity, is the vibration number of the note examined. If the note is between two reeds, that is in a machine having stops or reeds two vibrations apart, its position can be accurately determined also.
