Monsignor Murphy variously served as Professor of Theology and Vice President of Carlow College (1871-1886). He was parish priest in Kildare Town (1886-1901) and Maryborough (Portlaoise) (1901-1941); and served as Vicar General of the Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin (1886-1941). In 1883, Monsignor Murphy was chosen as Dignissimus for the position of Bishop of Ossory, and he was twice nominated for the position of Bishop of Kildare & Leighlin.
