                "value": "One of the most celebrated of the Irish poets of the Aisling period was Brian Merriman, who lived from 1757 to 1808, and in 1780, when he was 23, wrote a famous poem called \"The Midnight Court,\" probably the only poem ever written that can be read without blushes in a company of women, but not in a company of men. It has within recent years been translated into English by Frank O'Connor, and by Lord Longford, and Arthur Usher. The first of these translations was banned by the Irish Censorship Board. Last year, Mr. Thomas Culhane, a distinguished member of your society, came into possession, as heir, of what must be the rarest transcript in beautiful Irish manuscript written into a copybook of this long poem, which satirises late marriages in Ireland. This important discovery in Melbourne has been lent by Mr. Culhane to the Irish writer, Fiachra Eilgeach, who is preparing a definitive edition of the poem. Mr. Culhane wishes then, to present it to the National Library of Ireland. So that the Aisling Society, through its member Mr. Culhane, continues, in a different but now more valuable way, the Irish-Australian tradition mentioned by Michael Davitt. The incarnation of the soul of Ireland is proved, by Mr. Culhane, to be very much alive in Melbourne.",

Following a request that I made to an address in that city, Miss Eva O'Sullivan made a diligent search amongst old letters and papers and has been good enough to send them to me. They are of such historical interest, not only for Ireland but for Australia, that the Librarian of the National Library in Canberra is agreeing to microfilm them for the libraries of Tasmania, Queensland and the National Library of Australia, as well as for the National Library of Ireland. These are the letters written by the 1848 prisoners by Dr. Kevin Izod O'Doherty and by his wife, Eva of The Nation. They begin with a letter to Eva written by John Martin, the great Presbyterian leader of the Irish national movement of the Famine period, and it was written in Cove Harbour before his convict ship sailed. I know it will interest you if I read a short extract from the 8-page letter.",

                "value": "In a previous issue of \"The Nationalist\" I wrote something of perhaps a little interest to readers about the old \"Charter School\", Cashel built in 1745; and as the venerable building is situated in a locality that awakens memories of the past, I deem it timely to deal with it. At the rear of the old school in beautiful undulating ground, well-sheltered with fine trees, stands the home of the patriot Michael Doheny, known as Ally Aleen or Abbey View. Doheny resided in this house for some short time, and it is generally accepted that his colleagues Smith O'Brien, Thomas Francis Meagher and other members of The Young Ireland Party held secret meetings there before the trials in Clonmel Court house which sent Meagher and his companions to Van Dimen's Land and drove Doheny (who escaped trial) to the land of the Stars and Stripes.",

                "value": "Adjacent to the old school mentioned, another spacious house stands, another building known as \"The Latin School\" where formerly young men preparing for the priesthood received their classical training. In this ancient Academy the much-respected Martin Delahunt taught Greek and Latin to a large number of students belonging to the city and district until his death in 1873. So endearing was the memory of the old professor to his pupils and people that they decided to erect a memorial to perpetuate his memory, and accordingly sent circulars to past pupils settled in many parts of the world, resulting in a very generous response. After a short period a splendid monument was erected over his remains in the Cashel cemetery. I give here the inscription:—",

                "value": "The successor of Mr. Delahunt in the old Academy was the scholarly Mr. Patrick O'Hara, who taught for about ten years, removing to Tipperary town, his native place, where he died. It is believed Mr. O'Hara gave the locality ('The Kiln') the picturesque name \"The Latin Quarter.\" Some time professor of classics at Castleknock College, he ruled the Academy successfully, having the honour of knowing that pupils of his, such as Monsignor O'Ryan, Denver, Col. (lately deceased); Patrick Shelly O'Ryan, whom I mentioned, and many others gained renown in foreign lands. During those days of private academies in Cashel, before Rockwell College became the famous Seminary it is now, the humble school where Mr. Delahunt and Mr. O'Hara taught was regarded as one of the most successful in Munster.",

                "value": "Dr. Moran was born in Leighlinbridge, County Carlow, in 1830. Having lost both his parents early in life, he went to Rome in 1842 at the age of twelve and spent the next twenty years as student, professor and Vice-Rector of the Irish College. His deep interest in Irish studies began in Rome. In 1866 he returned to Ireland and became Cardinal Cullen's private secretary, while also acting as professor of Hebrew and Scripture in Clonliffe College. In 1871 he was chosen as Coadjutor Bishop of Ossory and succeeded to the See in August, 1872. Having spent twelve years in Kilkenny, he was appointed Archbishop of Sydney in 1884, and in the following year Cardinal.",

The Kerry riviera offers the most hopeful and promising attraction, but amenities will have to be improved and there is no room for complacency. The Ventry, Dunquin and Ballyferriter areas, which are the most favoured resorts, for some not very apparent reason, have no electrification system. This is greatly to be deplored, no matter how tangible the arguments may be against it.",
