It is not easy for believers in a rigid doctrine to accept the destruction of the reputation of the man whom they had accepted and proclaimed as the great living interpreter of that doctrine. The most notable reaction to Khrushchev's speech has come from Italy, the country with the largest Communist Party in Europe. It has taken a peculiar form, in pronouncements both from the Communist leader, Signor Togliatti, and from Signor Nenni, leader of the Left Wing Socialist Party hitherto the staunchest ally of the Communists and a holder of the Stalin Prize.",

                "value": "What both men have said has caused great anxiety among Italian Communists. They go far enough with Khrushchev as to say that the personal dictatorship of Stalin was against Marxist principles. But they have to explain why they were not aware of that as far back as 1938. They, like Khrushchev and other Communist leaders, joined in the adulation of the man they now disown. The present Russian leaders say that fear of the dictator while he was alive silenced their protests, that those closest to him were most in danger. The two Italians conveniently say that ignorance of events in Russia led them to take part in building up the Stalin myth. If their claim is true it is an amazing revelation of the workings of the Communist Party, of the degree of information or responsibility allowed by Moscow to Communist leaders in other lands. Togliatti refuses to exonerate Khrushchev and his colleagues from complicity in the Stalin regime. But if he refuses to believe them when they say fear kept them quiet why should his followers believe him when he says that ignorance kept him a Stalinist.",

                "value": "His attack on Khrushchev has added to the perplexities caused in the Communist Party by Khrushchev's attack on Stalin. Nenni has gone a great deal further. He has even hinted that Khrushchev is now trying to sieze power as Stalin did after the Communist Party Congress of 1934. He has attacked all dictatorships, either personal or of the proletariat, and said that the democratic path is the only possible one. The effect of this on Italian Communism can be judged from the fact that its best ally, Nenni's Party, polled over three million votes at the last general election. According to some opinions the loss to the Communist strength from these denunciations among the leaders may at the next election enable the Left Wing Socialists to push the Communist Party out of its position as the second strongest political power in Italy.",
