converted to Protestantism in about 1808. Like other Gaelic scholars of the early nineteenth century, he ran an evangelical Bible school dedicated to converting the native Irish through the medium of the Irish language. His ‘An Irish and English Spelling Book’ reached its nineteenth edition by 1848. Connellan claimed his dictionary offered an ‘easy path to the first rudiments of knowledge’. With this knowledge attained, the reader’s ‘interest would soon stimulate him to the acquisition of the English language, on which his hopes depend’.
