The new Church and Friary at Langa are almost completed. Exxx But I have to announce that a tragic and disappointing situation has arisen. The Government has refused Fr. Christopher permission to reside at Langa. Apparently there was a law forbidding Europeans to live in Native Locations in S. Africa, but it was not strictly enforced. There is actually an English church minister residing at Langa. When we got the lease of this ground it was granted for the purpose of a church building and the residences of pastors and teachers. The Cape Town City intended to pass the plans of the Friary as a building specifically intended for Exxx a European resident, and no difficulty was foreseen. The new government have adopted a more strict policy of affairs segregation. We are still appealing to the Minister of Native Affairs, but there does not seem to be any great hope of success. Father Christopher can live there during the daytime but he must sleep in Athlone. If the appeal fails it seems that the best thing to do would be to cut off a certain section of the house for Fr.
